Why buy online?

It is easy for me to forget that most people aren't as comfortable with online shopping as I am, especially for large purchases. There's a big difference between sending $20.00 to a well known company like Amazon.com for a book and sending a $1000.00 to an online warranty company you may or may not have ever heard of. Become an informed consumer and research the company.

Have you ever caught yourself saying, "but my salesman said      ." What I like best about shopping online is that everything is in writing and can be printed and saved ( on your web browser's menu bar, click "File" then "Print"). When I make major purchases online, in addition to printing and saving contracts, I print and save all the information about the product I'm purchasing. If I have problems in the future, I have a written record of the original advertisement.

How can I check out a company?

You should always check out a company before making a major purchase online. By doing a little homework, you can distinguish the industry leaders who have been around for years, from the fly by night schemes that will rip you off. You need to answer the several questions. Does the company value it's good name? Does the company participate in any of the Better Business Bureau's programs? How long has this company been doing business under this name?

Companies with poor records often simply change their name in order to make it difficult for consumers to find out about existing complaints. Take a look at this Better Business Bureau Report, and you'll see what I mean. If you discover a company you're interested in is doing business under many different names, be suspicious because obviously the company cares very little for their own brand name.

While there are many good sources of information on the web, I recommend researching companies with various programs from the Better Business Bureau. At the bureau's main site, www.bbb.org you can perform a quick search of state records for information on a particular company. Some states will even list all resolved and unresolved complaints against a company.

A good sign indication for reliable web sites is participation in the Better Business Bureau's Online Reliability Program. Companies which meet the program's requirements and agree to dispute resolution through a Better Business Bureau approved mediator. Companies which participate in this program tend to be much more reliable than those which do not.
